Holly strode down the aisle. She approached Javier first, who was eyeing her with unconcealed skepticism.

“Where are you from?” she asked him. “What town?”

“Ugh.” He shook his head. “You’re as bad as George with this nonsense.”

“Is it Covenant?”

“Yes!” Javier clapped his hands in mock celebration. “Well done! We’re all from the same crappy town. Can I go to sleep now?”

“It’s not that we’re all from Covenant,” Holly explained. “We’re all still in Covenant.”

She opened the Bible and pointed to the writing on the inside cover. Everyone scooted forward in their seats to look.

“This is Covenant,” she said. “We never left.”

“See?” George said to Javier. “I told you it was important.”

Then Holly pulled the folded-­up letter from the front of the book. Like the Bible, it looked ancient. Its edges were tattered, and the years had stained it yellow and brown in spots. She began unfolding it.

“Just . . . careful,” George said.

“I know,” Holly said. It felt delicate and brittle in her hands.

She scanned the page. The writing was faded, and it was difficult to read in the dim light. She squinted, bringing the paper closer to her face.

The handwriting was so neat and elegant it was almost like a work of art. She noticed the spelling of some of the words seemed strange, but she could translate them easily enough.

“What does it say?” Petunia craned her neck to try and get a glimpse.

“I’ll read it out loud,” Holly said. She cleared her throat and began.
